Ich fasse mich hier kurz: WAKING UP ist ein Buch, welches man schlichtweg lesen sollte, wenn man sich auch nur irgendwie für das Thema „Spiritualität“ interessiert. Sam Harris hat hier ein Buch vorgelegt, welches ich in dieser Sparte definitiv als „zukünftigen Klassiker“ titulieren kann.Harris‘ gesamter Ansatz, dass tiefe Spiritualität auch (oder womöglich sogar: nur) ohne Religion möglich ist, und das sich Atheismus und Spirituelle Überzeugungen keineswegs ausschließen, wird in hochinteressanten Gedankengängen dargestellt. WAKING UP ist hierbei sowohl für Leser mit Vorwissen wie für auch kompletten Neueinsteigern in diese Thematik eine faszinierende Lektüre.Sam Harris hat hiermit ein wirklich außergewöhnliches, bemerkenswertes Buch vorgelegt – wer sich für das Thema interessiert kommt an WAKING UP nicht vorbei!
...vor allem was das Diskreditieren von Nahtoderlebnissen oder generell außerkörperlichen Erfahrungen angeht.Zuallererst sei jedoch erwähnt dass ich den Schreibstil als äußerst langwierig und sich ständig wiederholend empfunden habe. Es nervt auch ein wenig dass sich die Angriffe auf die institutionalisierten Religion einfach viel zu oft wiederholen (egal ob man diese als gerechtfertigt ansieht, oder nicht). Man hat auch bereits nach dem zweiten oder dritten Rant auf das verschiedenste Religionen begriffen, dass Harris einzig vielleicht dem Buddhismus etwas abgewinnen kann und auch hier nur den Zweigen die sich auf Selbsterkenntnis konzentrieren.Grundsätzlich würde mir seine Einstellung ja sehr sympathisch erscheinen: Nichts blind zu glauben und sich selbst auf die Suche nach Erkenntnis machen. Das ist eine Ansicht die auch ich teile.Und so bleibt mir nichts anderes übrig als sagen zu müssen: Nein, Sam Harris... ich nehme die Ableitungen die sie sich aus ihren Erfahrungen anstellen nicht als gegeben hin, denn ich denke sie machen es sich zu einfach.Nur weil man im Kern vielleicht die Illusion des Ego's auf einer Erfahrungsebene begriffen hat, so kann man meiner Meinung nach alleine dadurch nicht einfach ableiten, dass alle Nahtoderfahrungen bzw. außerkörperliche Erfahrungen die Menschen haben eine reine Produktion ihrer Phantasie sind.Ich selbst bin kein geübter außerkörperlicher Reisender, aber eines kann ich aus Erfahrung mit Gewissheit sagen: Es gibt Erfahrungen zu denen der Mensch fähig ist, die keine Träume sind und die nichts mit unserem Alltagsbewusstsein zu tun haben. Ich kann diese nicht im Detail erklären, genau so wenig wie der Rest der Menschheit, Sam Harris mit eingeschlossen. Diese Erfahrungen als reine Phantasien einzuordnen ist jedenfalls etwas zu einfach.Die Illusion des Egos zu erkennen ist eine Sache. Daraus abzuleiten dass der Mensch keine Seele hat und man sich damit begnügen sollte sich ständig an diese Tatsache zu erinnern um darin seine Freiheit zu erlangen, scheint mir allerdings eine ziemlich ärmliche Schlussfolgerung zu sein.
Hätte ich angefangen zu lesen, ohne Autor und Titel zu kennen, wäre ich vermutlich überzeugt gewesen, ein klassisches buddhistisches Buch über Meditation in der Hand zu halten. Es ist sehr interessant, Spiritualität aus dem Blickwinkel eines überzeugten und kämpferischen Atheisten zu sehen, insbesondere auch die vielen Parallelen zu buddhistischen Lehren über Leerheit und die Natur des Geistes.
Das Buch beinhaltet eine gute Mischung aus Wissenschaft (Hirnforschung, korrelierende Phenomäne), Philosophie und vor allem Spiritualität. Es ist gut und größtenteils verständlich geschrieben, da es mit einigen Analogien angereichert wurde. Hinzu kommt, dass es auch Praxistipps enthält. Ich kann auch sehr die Youtube-Auftritte oder Podcasts von Sam Harris empfehlen.

Sam Harris writes clearly, carefully and entertainingly about this serious topic. Perhaps somewhat repetitive in the first pages, but enjoyable.
A pleasurable read, fascinating, informative, thought provoking. In some ways, Harris makes the nature of our minds appear to make more sense, while in others he recounts mysteries revealed both by science and by contemplation.
It was about time that someone, such as Sam Harris, writes about a path to inner peace that stays in the realm of science and does not require religion. A good read, mind opening, and motivating.
