Yes, I take full responsibility for not reading the description of this book close enough before purchasing.That being said.....So disappointed by this book. I wanted a biographic, even elegiac book that memorialized Tony - and gave insights to who he was - by those that knew him well.Why in the world would I care what random people on the internet think about Tony? Because that is all the book is, cut and pasted remembrances from the CNN website, sprinkled in with short reactions from associates. And even those are sad as they seem to just be taken verbatim from social media posts - adding nothing new to Tony's legacy.We know AB inspired millions. We don't need to spend $20 to be reminded.As I said, I blame myself.The one good thing about the book are the photos, which are fantastic. This would have been a much better book if it just had the photos with small blurbs giving the context of each.I hope in the future somebody puts out a thoughtful, insightful bio of AB to fill the gap I thought this book would.
Don't go into this expecting any kind of great insights - those are best left to the books Tony has written himself. This book, on the other hand, is essentially a Wailing Wall for fans to express their joy, grief, happiness, and sadness at Tony's passing. Most of the photographs appear to be high-resolution still frames from his show. Comforting and familiar, yes; but again, nothing new or unexpected.If you have a desire to connect on a superficial level with Tony's fans, this is your book. If, instead, you're hoping to connect more closely with the man himself, look elsewhere.
First ever Amazon review. I preordered this book, probably like many others. Unfortunately this thing is nothing but some very good photos and mostly quotes from strangers that commented during/on CNN's online memorial. There are a few quotes from those who actually knew him or met him but 98% is from random strangers. It's like someone's Instagram with comments from followers on print. It's such a shame. As a fan starting from the Cook's Tour days, I so wish Anthony Bourdain were alive; and so that he could hold this 'book' up to the camera and share an insightful comment on how big a POS this thing is.
I preordered this when I saw it was coming out, and it arrived today. I haven’t read all of it, but have browsed through, and I am impressed. I wasn’t so sure as it was done by CNN, and honestly I’ve loved Bourdain since his show No Reservations on the Travel Channel. But it is a very nice tribute with beautiful photos and quotes from people both well known and unknown fans.
I thought this would have more of a focus on stories from people who knew Bourdain, with social media posts speckled throughout. It’s the other way around, so it’s a little bit of a let down. However, the photographs of Bourdain are wonderful and there have been more than a few that have reminded me of some of my favourite locations
